Während seines jüngsten Forschungsaufenthalts in New York City beschäftigte sich Marco Schmitt mit einer spezifischen Frage: Wie funktionieren Institutionen und inwieweit repräsentieren Strukturen der Verwaltung und des Managements Kunstinstitutionen? Um dieser Frage weiter nachzugehen, besuchte und fotografierte er die internen Büros einiger Schlüsselfiguren im Kontext der New Yorker Kunstwelt, wie Richard Armstrong, im Guggenheim, Massimiliano Gioni, im New Museum und RoseLee Goldberg, im Büro von Performa. Seine Fotografien konzentrieren sich auf persönliche Objekte, Fragmente der Designsprache und wie diese Elemente verwendet werden oder werden könnten, um zu zeigen, wie und wo die Regisseure arbeiten. Als Teil des Performance-Programms ICH/I schlägt Schmitt vor, diese Besuche in der Umgebung von Stuttgart wieder aufzugreifen, wo er seine Liste weiterentwickelt. Indem er das Material aus New York mit neuem Material von Stuttgarter Institutionen kombiniert, will er eine Installation im ersten Stock des Künstlerhauses Stuttgart entwickeln, wo sich Büro und Verwaltung befinden. Die Besucher sind eingeladen, mit dem Künstler einen Rundgang zu machen, um die Fotografien als kollektives Erlebnis im Bürokontext gemeinsam zu "lesen": "Betreten Sie mein Büro und werfen Sie einen Blick in meine Ausstellung! Werfen Sie einen Blick in mein Büro, und sehen Sie meine Haltung... Was haben das Guggenheim Museum NYC, das New Museum NYC, Performa NYC, Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, der Württembergische Kunstverein Stuttgart und das Künstlerhaus Stuttgart gemeinsam? Jedes von ihnen hat eine Stelle für einen Direktor und jeder Direktor hat seine eigene Bürostruktur."

During his recent research visit in New York City, Marco Schmitt was occupied with a specific question: How do institutions operate and to what extent do structures of administration and management represent art institutions? To further explore this question, he visited and photographed the internal offices of some key figures within the context of the New York art world, such as Richard Armstrong, at the Guggenheim, Massimiliano Gioni, at the New Museum and RoseLee Goldberg, at the Performa office. His photographs focus on personal objects, fragments of design language and how these elements are or might be used to reveal how and where the directors work. As part of the performance program, ICH/I, Schmitt proposes to retrieve those visits within the setting of Stuttgart, where he will continue to develop his list. Combining the material from New York with new material from Stuttgart-based institutions, he aims to develop an installation on the first floor of Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, where the office and administration are located. Visitors are invited to take a tour with the artist in order to “read” the photographs together as a collective experience within the office context.
