Bei der letzten Ausstellung des Projektraums Spoiler mit dem Titel „Airbag“ präsentierte Marco Schmitt vier Arbeiten, die auf der folgenden Seite näher erläutert werden, sowie die speziell für den Spoiler Aktionsraum neu entwickelte Performance mit dem Titel „Break on Through to the Other Side“.

2024 Performance
Für seine Performance durchbrach Schmitt die Wand des Raums und setzte anschließend die Steine wieder zurück in das entstandene Loch. Danach bedeckte er die Bruchstelle mit Styroporplatten und sprühte mit einer Spraydose die Wörter „TEH END“ in den Innenraum und spiegelverkehrt „HET DNE“ auf den Außenraum. Am Abend der Ausstellungseröffnung brach er während seiner Performance als Crashtest-Dummy, der sich anhand künstlicher Intelligenz (KI) aus Konzernstrukturen befreite, erneut mit einem Smart-Lenkrad durch die Wand. Dabei fielen die Steine mit Wucht heraus und erzeugten ein kraftvolles, visuelles Spektakel.
Auf der anderen Seite angekommen, gründete er mit den Ausstellungsbesucher*innen die „United States of US“, einen staatenlosen Staat des Wir-Zustands. Dieser symbolisiert den ideellen Status quo eines Paradieses, in dem es möglich ist, alle individuellen Mikro-Utopien, Wünsche und Träume der Menschen zu vereinen.
TEH END - HET DNE

„Teh End“ thematisiert „Das Ende“, das kein Ende ist, sondern den Anfang eines neuen Endes. Während seiner Performance durchbrach Marco Schmitt die Arbeit, wodurch diese zerstört wurde. Zurück blieb ein Loch und Trümmer aus herausgefallenen Wandsteinen, die den Prozess von Zerstörung und Transformation eindrucksvoll sichtbar machen.
PEACE-RALLYE STEERING WHEEL
2024, 50x50cm, gelasertes Acrylglas, fluoreszierend
Das „Frieden-Rallye Lenkrad“ kombiniert ein aus Acrylglas gelasertes Peace-Symbol mit einem Rallye-Lenkrad. Gedreht erinnert das Symbol an die germanische Rune „Algiz“ (Elch), die Schutz und Stärke symbolisiert. Diese Verbindung thematisiert die Ambivalenz von Macht und Frieden und lädt zur Reflexion über die Bedeutung von Schutz in unterschiedlichen Kontexten ein.
Friedenssymbole wie das „Peace Steering Wheel“ stehen für den Wunsch nach Frieden und Völkerverständigung. Sie sind zentral für die Friedensbewegung und finden sich auch in anderen sozialen Bewegungen. Das bekannteste Friedenszeichen, entworfen 1958 von Gerald Holtom für die britische Kampagne zur nuklearen Abrüstung, kombiniert die Zeichen N (nuclear) und D (disarmament) aus dem Winkeralphabet. Alternativ interpretierte Holtom das Symbol als einen hilflosen Menschen mit gesenkten Armen angesichts einer von Waffen dominierten Welt. Der Kreis um das Symbol repräsentiert die gesamte Erde – ein universelles Zeichen für Frieden und globale Verantwortung.
A SIGN ON THE ROAD SAID: TAKE US TO MADRE

Ergänzt wurde die Ausstellung durch das 2012 in New York City produziertes Video, in dem Schmitt mit hoher Geschwindigkeit über New Yorker Brücken fährt, um schließlich auf einem Parkplatz durch eine Wand aus 48 Kartons zu brechen. Jeder Karton enthält ein Kunstwerk von einem der 48 beteiligten Künstler*innen.

At the last exhibition of the project space Spoiler, titled „Airbag,“ Marco Schmitt presented four works, which are detailed on the following page, along with the specially developed performance for the Spoiler action space, titled „Break on Through to the Other Side.“

2024 Performance
For his performance, Schmitt broke through the wall of the space and then replaced the stones in the resulting hole. He then covered the fracture with styrofoam panels and spray-painted the words „TEH END“ on the interior and the mirrored „HET DNE“ on the exterior. On the evening of the exhibition opening, he once again broke through the wall during his performance as a crash test dummy who, through artificial intelligence (AI), freed himself from corporate structures. The stones fell out with force, creating a powerful visual spectacle.
Upon reaching the other side, he founded the „United States of US“ with the exhibition visitors—a stateless state of collective existence. This symbolizes the idealized status quo of a paradise, where it is possible to unite all individual micro-utopias, wishes, and dreams of the people.
TEH END - HET DNE

„Teh End“ explores the concept of an ending that is not an end, but rather the beginning of a new ending. During his performance, Marco Schmitt broke through the piece, destroying it. What remained was a hole and scattered fragments of fallen wall stones, making the process of destruction and transformation visibly striking.
PEACE-RALLYE STEERING WHEEL

The „Peace-Rallye Steering Wheel“ combines a laser-cut peace symbol with a rally steering wheel. When spun, the symbol resembles the Germanic rune „Algiz“ (Elk), which represents protection and strength. This connection highlights the ambivalence between power and peace, inviting reflection on the meaning of protection in different contexts.
Peace symbols like the „Peace Steering Wheel“ represent the desire for peace and international understanding. They are central to the peace movement and have also been adopted by other social movements. The most well-known peace sign, designed in 1958 by Gerald Holtom for the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, combines the semaphore letters N (nuclear) and D (disarmament). Alternatively, Holtom interpreted the symbol as a helpless person with lowered arms in the face of a world dominated by weapons. The circle around the symbol represents the entire Earth – a universal sign of peace and global responsibility.

The exhibition was complemented by a video produced in 2012 in New York City, in which Schmitt drives at high speed over New York bridges, eventually crashing through a wall made of 48 cardboard boxes in a parking lot. Each box contains an artwork by one of the 48 participating artists.
